Mogao Cave 3: Thousand-Armed, Thousand-Eyed Avalokitesvara - Vasu

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Yuan dynasty (1271–1368)
This figure stands to the right of the Thousand-Armed, Thousand-Eyed Avalokitesvara on the north wall, mirroring the depiction of Mahadevi on the left. Vasu was a non-Buddhist practitioner who, upon meeting the Buddha, took refuge and became liberated. He looks straight ahead with a strong, contemplative gaze. His eyebrows and beard are long. Vasu wears a green lotus headdress, a wide-sleeved inner garment, and a green outer robe. His palms are joined and he appears gentle and serious.
