Gakyeonsa Temple Vairocana Hall: Vairocana Buddha

Vairocana Buddha was a popular focus of devotion at the end of the Unified Silla dynasty (668–935). The Buddha is depicted in full lotus position with hands making the bodhyangi (wisdom fist) mudra. The monastic robe leaves the right shoulder bare and the folds descend in a rippling pattern. The lotus throne on which the figure sits is supported on an octagonal base patterned with lions and clouds. The intersecting aureole and nimbus are also decorated with cloud patterns and incorporated within a flaming mandorla. Nine Buddhas, all seated on clouds decorate the mandorla. The statue was listed as Treasure No. 433 in 1966. |
