Bodhisattva in Contemplation

CHINA; Tang dynasty (618–907); Copper alloy; H: 11 cm; Shanghai Museum, China
This Bodhisattva sits with legs crossed on a plain throne. The figure's right elbow rests on the right knee and the hand is held up towards the head, which is inclined in the contemplative posture with the eyes slightly closed. The figure's hair is bound into a simple topknot. A ribbon hangs down from the back of the head to the lower chest. The upper body is adorned with a stole, armlets, bracelets, and a large neck ring. A long dhoti is worn on the lower body and clings to the body in a natural way. The statue was most likely created during the High Tang period (712-756).
