Mogao Caves: Head of a Bodhisattva
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Northern Wei dynasty (386–534); Clay; H: 23.5 cm; State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia
This sculpture was found in the Mogao Caves. Beneath its topknot, the Bodhisattva’s head leans slightly to one side and the face is round. The eyes are large, the nose broad, and the mouth small. Damage to the clay exterior reveals a supportive linen layer within. |
