Wat Pho Chai Semaram: Life of the Buddha - Return to Kapilavastu

THAILAND, Kalasin; 8th–9th century; Sandstone; Khon Kaen National Museum, Thailand
The image appears on a boundary stone and is thought to depict a scene from the Buddha 's return to Kapilavastu after attaining enlightenment. The Buddha sits at the top with legs pendent and body tilted to the right. Faint bas-relief outlines of eaved roofs surround him. Two female figures sit below the Buddha on the right. The figure using her long hair to carpet the Buddha 's feet is identified as his wife, Yasodhara. She shows her respect by wiping his soles with her right hand. The figure behind Yasodhara carries a child, most likely Rahula, whose hand is pointing toward the Buddha. One of the other two kneeling figures is King Suddhodana, who is recognizable by his crown. An elaborate gateway is located below, with figures looking upwards. The figures have round faces, large eyes and pronounced lips, typical of the Dvaravati (circa 6th–13th century) style.
