Kizil Cave 77: Vajradhara
CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu; circa 4th century; 59 x 38 cm; Museum of Asian Art, Berlin, Germany
This image of Vajradhara was originally located at the bottom left of the statue on the back wall of the main chamber. Vajradhara is seated on a square woven seat, wearing a jeweled crown with two feathers and earrings of pearl. The hair is coiled at the back of the head. The figure is clad in flowing stoles, ornaments, and a knee-length lower garment. The vajra held in his left hand before the chest is painted in green and brown, giving a three-dimensional effect, and a whisk is held high in the right hand. Vajradhara’s left foot touches the ground, and the right foot is folded on the seat. Vajradhara looks heavenward with a slightly tilted head and raised eyes. |
