Mogao Cave 435: Central Pillar
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Northern Wei dynasty (386–534)
The central pillar has at least one niche on each side. The arched main niche is on the east side of the pillar. There are honeysuckle and lotus patterns on the lintel, and the body of a dragon frames the niche, with a head on each side. A Buddha is enshrined within the niche and is seated with legs pendent on a diamond throne. The face is round with a gentle smile. The Buddha wears a dark red robe, with the right hand raised and held palm out before the chest and the left hand held palm out beside the knee. The Buddha is encircled by a nimbus and a mandorla, and is flanked by images of Bodhisattvas making offerings. There are two painted Bodhisattvas on each side within the niche; all four assume different poses and wear triple-disc crowns, flowing stoles, and long lower garments. |
