Mogao Cave 17: Warrior
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907); Ink and color on silk; 72 x 17 cm; Guimet Museum of Asian Art, Paris, France
In this late 8th century painting, a warrior with wide eyes, raised eyebrows, and a mustache stands on two lotus pedestals, turned slightly to one side. Golden ornaments adorn his body. A black and yellow stole is wrapped around the shoulders and arms. His left hand is clenched in a fist in front of his chest and his right hand holds a vajra. Red and blue clouds float above the nimbus. Shades of red on the warrior's body serve to enhance the portrayal of his large muscles. The right foot is raised, suggesting readiness to move. |
