Guanyin Temple Avalokitesvara Hall: Twelve Perfect Enlightenment Bodhisattvas

CHINA, Shanxi, Changzhi; Ming dynasty (1368–1644); Clay; H: 66–80 cm
The statues of the Twelve Perfect Enlightenment Bodhisattvas are located along the north and south walls within the hall, specifically the third tier counting upwards from the bottom. They include Manjusri, Samantabhadra, Universal Wisdom, Vajragarbha, Maitreya, Pure Wisdom, Unhindered Power and Virtue, Sound Discernment, Purifier of All Karmic Hindrances, Universal Enlightenment, and Foremost in Virtue and Goodness. These are the Bodhisattvas who ask Sakyamuni Buddha how to cultivate and attain enlightenment in the Sutra of Perfect Enlightenment.
The height of the statues varies from 66 cm to 80 cm. All are ornamented with headdresses and jewels and wear loose gowns or stoles. Their facial features and expressions are similar but each figure is distinct in their various poses. The mythical creatures on which they sit are quite ornate and some are in openwork design.
