Bharhut Sculptures
INDIA, Madhya Pradesh, Bharhut; circa 1st century BCE; Red sandstone; Diameter: 48 cm; Indian Museum, Kolkata, India
A dwarfed yaksini with braided hair arranged in a topknot stands in an inner circle with one hand holding a garland and one hand at her hip. Beneath her in the outer circle, a squatting dwarf yaksa is steadying lotus stalks in either hand. The lotuses wind upwards in an entwined pattern of alternating buds and blooms. Four more lotus buds emerge from outside the medallion. The combination of auspicious symbols and deities within the decorative scheme is typical of the inclusion of folk motifs in Bharhut sculptures. |
