Bharhut: Paying Respect to a Stupa

INDIA, Madhya Pradesh, Bharhut; circa early 1st century BCE; Red sandstone; 47.5 x 51.9 cm; Freer Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., USA
This relief was discovered at Bharhut Stupa. Garlands decorate the stupa's dome and flowers are mounted on the harmika and parasol. A row of handprints around the base of the building signifies the numerous devotees that have paid respect there. A male and a female devotee kneel below the railings, while others circumambulate the stupa with their right shoulder inward. Two more devotees stand beneath trees at the edge of the composition with their palms raised in reverence. Floral offerings are presented by an apsara on the left and a kalavinka on the right.
