Shaoxing Keyan: Maitreya Buddha

CHINA, Zhejiang, Shaoxing; Sui dynasty (581–618); Stone; H: 11.3 m
Located 12 km west of Shaoxing, Keyan is a quarry that dates from the Sui dynasty (581-618) and occupies 11 ha. A 27.3 m high rocky outcrop has a niche carved into it with a Maitreya Buddha inside. The figure smiles with a rounded face and has finely defined eyes. The Buddha wears a monastic robe over both shoulders. The lower part of the body blends with the rock, making it appear as though the Buddha emerges naturally from the rock. This sculpture was listed as a Provincial Cultural Heritage Site in 1997.
