Mogao Cave 388: Ceiling

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Sui to Tang dynasty (581–907)
A lotus flower is featured in the center of the square caisson, with floral clusters in the corners and brightly-colored, multi-layered border patterns. There are four pairs of apsaras which encircle the canopy-like center on a white background. Two pairs of apsaras make offerings on the east and west slopes, and two pairs scatter flowers on the north and south slopes. Apsaras such as these were a common feature of ceiling murals during the late Sui dynasty (581-618). Thousand Buddha images are neatly arrayed on the four slopes of the ceiling.
