CHINA, Gansu, Tianshui; Northern Zhou dynasty (557–581); Clay; H: 85 cm
Seated within the niche on the right side of the back wall, the Buddha has a smooth usnisa, a youthful face with high eyebrows and a gentle smile with the head slightly inclined. The Buddha wears a light outer monastic robe and an inner robe, and holds the hems at the chest with both hands. The statue, originally painted, has become a soapy white. Both of the Buddha’s legs are missing. |
