According to Art Records of Wintry Pine Pavilion, Xuezhou was a painter and monk of Nanping Temple in Zhejiang. He was famous for his painting of Praying for Rain at Dragon Lake, depicted from a scene in Dehua, Fujian. As remarked in Records of Famous Paintings and Calligraphy in Yizhou, he mastered the painting of landscapes using luxuriant and strong brushstrokes, expressing scenes filled with fog and clouds.
During his travels to Shu (present day Sichuan) during the rule of Emperor Guangxu (reigned 1875-1908) of the Qing dynasty, Xuezhou left behind a number of paintings. His landscape paintings and inscribed poems, such as the Poem Inscription on a painting of Landscape, are kept at Ho's Calligraphy Foundation in Taipei, Taiwan. |
