The statue is situated midway up Mount Suamsan and was carved from two sections and then assembled. Damage from a fall has necessitated repair. The statue was listed as Treasure No. 508 in 1969.
The columnar structure is typical of the regional style during the Goryeo period (918–1392). The head is virtually square with exaggeratedly long ears, and ends in a tall hat topped with a hexagonal canopy. The clean lines of the work are carved in relief, with sloping shoulders and arms held across the body, demonstrating a simple economy of technique that is typically Korean. The left hand hangs down in a mudra while the right hand is raised indecipherably. The cylindrical bottom section of the statue is carved in much less detail. |
