Wat Ratburana: Vessel in the Shape of a Water Bird

This 15th century gold ritual vessel takes the form of a water bird and was excavated from Wat Ratburana in Ayutthaya in 1957. It was found in the underground palace of the temple, along with other Buddhist artifacts.
The bird was made using repousse technique and has a round body seated on a plain base. The upper part of its body is adorned with a jewel design, and a gem-like pattern runs along its body. Its curved neck culminates in a long, narrow head, while the ornate comb is adorned with tiny pearls. A cavity in the body serves as a vessel for holding offerings, which can be poured through the bird's long beak. |
