Manuscript of the Avatamsaka Sutra
CHINA; 18th century; Wood and paper; 9.5 x 55.5 cm; Tibet Museum, Lhasa, Tibet, China
The upper and lower covers are made from walnut and are undecorated. The Avatamsaka Sutra, one of the most important texts of Mahayana Buddhism, is written in Tibetan in gold on black paper. There are images of seated Buddhas on either side of the text. On each end, there is a large key pattern connected by horizontal lines. The colorful Buddha images provide a pleasing contrast with the black paper and gold lettering. |
