Yulin Cave 2: Life of the Buddha - Parinirvana

CHINA, Gansu, Guazhou; Western Xia period (1032–1227)
This mural of the Buddha 's parinirvana is located in the center of the upper register of the back (east) wall. The Buddha, reclined on a raised structure, wears a monastic robe that leaves the chest and right shoulder bare. The Buddha is surrounded by mourning disciples and Bodhisattvas who either stand or kneel. The exaggerated sadness of the disciples contrasts with the calm, peaceful expression of the Buddha. While the style of the painting is somewhat simplistic, the overall portrayal is powerful and clear.
