Mogao Cave 17: Warrior

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907); Ink and color on silk; 79.5 x 25.5 cm; British Museum, London, United Kingdom
This late 9th century banner is painted with an image of a muscular warrior with angry, glaring eyes and a wide opened mouth. His left hand holds a flower while his right fist is clenched and raised above his head. Golden ornaments adorn the body. Black lines emphasize the warrior's muscles, suggesting tension and strength. The figure is predominantly colored with different shades of red. A set of decorative streamers were found with the banner. They can be detached from the bottom and stored separately. When they are added, the banner is 2 m long.
