Mogao Cave 194: Warrior

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907); Clay
Located on the left outside the niche in the back (west) wall of the main chamber, the warrior has a coiled topknot and wears a dhoti. He stands upright with his hips jutting out slightly to one side. The left arm is held before the chest while the right arm is raised high. Both hands are damaged. The abundant strength of this warrior is suggested by the muscular torso and legs. The creases and folds on the figure’s lower garment appear natural, suggesting a soft, light fabric. The garment is decorated with colorful floral and cloud motifs.
