Amitayus Buddha
NEPAL; 11th century; Gilt brass; H: 28 cm; State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia
The Buddha wears a crown shaped like a lotus bud as well as other ornate jewelry with floral motifs. The figure is elongated with a thin waist and the monastic robe leaves the right shoulder bare. The Buddha is seated in full lotus position with hands in dhyana (meditation) mudra while supporting a vase. The throne of inverted lotus petals rests on a rectangular platform. The outward facing peacocks below are iconographic representations of Amitayus's mount. The piece of fabric that drapes over the base displays a Dharma wheel on a lotus leaf. While the throne and base are of Nepalese design, the style of the statue is Tibetan. |
