Mogao Cave 432: Standing Bodhisattva

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Western Wei dynasty (535–556); Clay; H: 1.22 m
This statue is on the left of the niche on the east side of the central pillar. The Bodhisattva has a square face with delicate features. The figure gazes downward with a subdued yet joyful expression. A blue stole is draped over the shoulders and wraps around the body. The long lower garment has wavy folds which flow down the front, in the typical style of the late Northern Dynasties (386-581). The Bodhisattva is slightly inclined and stands barefoot on the ledge of the central pillar.
