Famen Temple Pagoda: Alms Bowl

CHINA, Shaanxi, Baoji; Tang dynasty (618–907), dated 873; Commissioned by Emperor Yizong; Gold; H: 7.4 cm, Diameter: 21.7 cm
This alms bowl was recovered from the underground palace of Famen Temple Pagoda in 1987. The rim of the bowl is inscribed with 70 Chinese characters, some of which indicate that it was created by the Wensiyuan Imperial Workshop on the emperor's decree.
　 The bowl is made of pure gold and weighs 574 g. Apart from the inscription, the surface is undecorated. It was an important offering instrument used in ceremonies for the veneration of the Buddha's finger bone relic by the emperor and his family.
