Yangpyeong: Standing Buddha

This figure, excavated from Sinhwari in Yangpyeong, dates from the Three Kingdoms period (57 BCE–668 CE), whose style was similar to the Northern Qi (550–577) and Sui (581–618) dynasties of China. The almost non-existent usnisa and the way the elongated earlobes are set close to the head and neck provide a streamlined appearance. Other elements contributing to the effect include the repeated theme of ovals and rounded arcs in the treatment of the clothing, terminated by the decorative ruffling at the foot of the skirt. The statue was listed as National Treasure No. 186 in 1976. |
