Kizil Cave 17: Vairocana Buddha
CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu; circa 6th century
This mural is on the outer wall of the right corridor near the main chamber. The image of a standing Vairocana Buddha is depicted within a large mandorla. The Buddha is barefoot and stands on a mound of grass in a sinuous pose. A nimbus, with eight small seated Buddhas, and a mandorla containing two layers of numerous seated Buddhas, are located behind Vairocana. The robe is illustrated with Bodhisattvas on the chest, and there is a Dharma wheel on each knee. The Buddha lowers the head slightly towards one side and seems to look at the monk who kneels below. Decorative images of jeweled ornaments and lotus buds are depicted outside the mandorla. |
