Seated Buddha

A gem is located on top of the Buddha's hair and the rounded face looks down in a tranquil manner. The Buddha wears a loose-fitting monastic robe, with the folds precisely delineated, and a sash tied at the waist. The figure is seated in full lotus posture with the left hand raised in the abhaya (fearlessness) mudra. The stylized lotus throne on which the figure sits is supported by a two-tier openwork hexagonal stand with enchased floriated designs. An inscription records that Wang Lei commissioned the sculpture in 1520.
