Wat Sri Chum: Phra Atchana

THAILAND, Sukhothai; 13th century; Plaster; H: 15 m
Phra Atchana is located in Wat Sri Chum, and is considered one of the masterpieces of the Sukhothai Kingdom (circa 1238–1438) with features characteristic of the time. It is also one of the largest seated Buddhas in the country, measuring 14.7 m high and 11.3 m from knee to knee. As part of the Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns, it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.
The statue is contained within a roofless shrine that allows the face of the statue to be visible through an opening at the front. The walls have a series of stucco reliefs depicting the Jataka tales.
The Buddha is seated in full lotus position, and shows broad shoulders giving way to a slender waist. The figure 's hair is neatly curled, the hairline is arched and the topknot is adorned with a flame. The Buddha 's compassionate demeanor is indicated by the downcast eyes and placid smile. The monastic robe leaves the right shoulder bare and is completely smooth. The hem of the robe folds into a neat gathering on the chest and extends to the navel where it unravels into a stylized ruffle. The Buddha 's right hand, on which there are traces of gilding, rests on the knee and forms the bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra.
