Sakyamuni Buddha and Attendants

The headless Sakyamuni Buddha stands on a rock at the center of this composition. Two Bodhisattvas, both holding their attributes, stand on both sides and beyond them are muscular Dharma protectors. All four figures have nimbuses. Behind these figures are four more Bodhisattvas interspersed with disciples. Guardian lions and heavenly musicians, worn almost beyond recognition, are in the foreground. The sides of the sculpture have carvings of Heavenly Kings while the back is incised with images of devotees. An inscription near the bottom identifies the subject and states the work was dedicated in 532 by the monk Sengxian. |
