Nagarjunakonda: Life of the Buddha - Departure and Renunciation
INDIA, Andhra Pradesh; circa 3rd century; Limestone; H: 178 cm; Archaeological Museum, Nagarjunakonda, Andhra Pradesh, India
This piece illustrates the story of Prince Siddhartha after he has left the palace at Kapilavastu. From the bottom, the scene takes place in a grove, where the prince bids farewell to his horse, Kanthaka, and charioteer Chandaka, who kneels before him on the right. Chandaka also appears on the left, receiving the prince's jewelry and clothing after he has cut off his long hair.
The middle register shows a deity supporting a large plate with the prince's hair and headdress in the center, while other deities crowd around paying reverence. The upper register takes place in the palace after Chandaka returns. King Suddhodana, sitting on the throne, turns his head toward the sky in despair when he learns of the prince's decision. Princess Yasodhara collapses to the ground on the right and the horse Kanthaka leans forward to nuzzle his mistress's hand. |
