Liu Gao

CHINA; Yuan dynasty (1271–1368)
Liu Gao was a sculptor who, according to a brief inscription on the Stele of Zhao Mengfu located in Jiangsu, once sculptured and painted Buddha statues at the White Stupa of Miaoying Temple in Beijing. Because of his outstanding skills, Kublai Khan (reigned 1260-1294), the first emperor of the Yuan dynasty, ordered him to redecorate the palace walls and Buddhist statues. Later, when Emperor Wuzhong (reigned 1307-1311) called for the renovation of Prajna Hall at Jinshan Temple in Jiangsu, he specifically requested Liu Gao to build the Zhaoguan Stone Pagoda, a structure intended to resemble the White Stupa of Miaoying Temple.
