Vajrasattva
BHUTAN; 15th–16th century; Bronze; H: 42 cm; National Museum of Bhutan, Paro
The statue depicts an exceptionally slender Vajrasattva seated in full lotus position on a double lotus throne. A vajra is held in the right hand and a bell in the left hand. The figure wears a five-leaf crown, inlaid with gems and with buoyant ribbons attached to sidepieces. The hair is tied into a topknot with a jewel at the crest. A few pieces of jewelry adorn the body, the most notable being the earrings. A thin stole wraps about the arms and loops at the elbows. The lower garment is substantial and is treated in some detail. The upper torso and lower body are attached at the waist with three rivets. |
