Simboksa Temple: Vairocana Buddha

This 10th century Buddha is seated in half lotus position on an oval throne that consists of a reverse lotus supported by rearing lions on a three-stepped pedestal. The mandorla originally behind the figure is missing. The statue was listed as Treasure No. 565 in 1972.
The Buddha has a low usnisa and deep cut eyebrows that continue downward to shape the nose. The earlobes are only moderately elongated but the three lines on the neck are emphatically incised. The monastic robe covers both shoulders but is opened at the front to reveal an inner robe that is fastened at the waist. The hem of the robe is decorated with a flower pattern and the folds are carefully delineated. The figure has hands in the bodhyangi (wisdom fist) mudra in which the right hand clasps the index finger of the left hand. |
