CAMBODIA, Siem Reap, Angkor; 12th century; Stone; H: 74.6 cm; Bangkok National Museum, Thailand
The relief was discovered at Angkor Wat and depicts the birth of the future Buddha. Queen Maya is standing and holding onto a branch of the asoka tree while supported by her sister, Mahaprajapati. Both women are wearing elaborately supported skirts. Brahma, depicted with three faces is wearing a cylindrical crown. He supports the newborn prince who kneels on a pedestal. There are three Buddha heads behind the prince, signifying he will become a Buddha. All the figures wear jewelry and are dressed like royalty.
