Tianshui: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva
CHINA, Gansu, Tianshui; Sui dynasty (581–618); Stone; H: 132 cm; Gansu Provincial Museum, Lanzhou, China
The statue is carved with economy and elegance. Avalokitesvara wears a petal-decorated headdress fronted by a seated Buddha. Two stranded bead ornaments fall from the headdress to form a triple loop over the skirt. A three-layered stole hangs on either side of the body. The raised right hand holds a lotus bud and the left hand grasps a vase. |
