Mogao Cave 45: Seated Buddha

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907); Clay
This High Tang period (712–756) seated Buddha is enshrined within the niche on the back (west) wall of the main chamber. The Buddha has curled hair, a usnisa, and a round face. The eyes are downcast beneath crescent-shaped eyebrows, and the red robe is opened at the chest and has loose sleeves. The Buddha is seated in full lotus position and the left hand forms the bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra while the right hand is raised with two fingers pointing up. A nimbus and flame-patterned mandorla surround the Buddha.
