Maijishan Niche 98: Buddha Triad

CHINA, Gansu, Tianshui; Northern Wei dynasty (386–534); Stone-core clay; H: 13.88 m (Buddha)
These statues of the Northern Wei dynasty (386–534) underwent restoration twice, once in the Song dynasty (960–1279) and once in the Yuan dynasty (1271-1368). The 13.88 m high Buddha stands on a lotus pedestal. The Buddha’s damaged left hand is raised as the right hand clasps a corner of the robe. On the left, the highly ornamented Bodhisattva wears a draped robe and, with the right hand placed on the chest, faces the Buddha. The right attendant Bodhisattva has been severely damaged.
