Shomyoji Temple: Portable Shrine with Ragaraja

This black lacquered shrine was listed as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
The shrine consists of a central panel and two side panels which are attached with hinges and fold in to make it easily portable. It has a circular layered base and a top that resembles a hip roof. The central feature is a 6.4 cm high gilt copper alloy statuette of Ragaraja. The three-eyed, six-armed figure appears ferocious with staring eyes and an open mouth. Ragaraja sits with legs crossed on a multi-layered lotus throne while holding various objects. The throne is supported by a multi-layer representation of Mount Sumeru with balustrades on a number of levels. Ragaraja has a narrow flaming nimbus and a broad mandorla. There are four seated Bodhisattvas painted behind Ragaraja and on the two side panels. |
