Longhua Temple: Bodhisattva in Contemplation
CHINA, Shandong, Binzhou; Eastern Wei dynasty (534–550); Commissioned by Zhang Jiaxi; Gilt bronze; H: 13.5 cm; Boxing County Museum, Binzhou, Shandong, China
ghly modeled Bodhisattva with a long face and a slender figure wearing an official’s headdress. The robe has thick folds that splay outwards and fold about the wrists, where the right hands is in abhaya (fearlessness) mudra.
The statue is located upon a double four-legged stand with one damaged corner. The worn inscription found on the stand only allows us to identify Zhang Jiaxi as the person who commissioned it. |
