Nagarjunakonda: Footprints of the Buddha

INDIA, Andhra Pradesh; circa 3rd century; Limestone; 53 x 45 cm; Archaeological Museum, Nagarjunakonda, Andhra Pradesh, India
These footprints are carved from a block of pale green limestone 12 cm thick. They point downward and stand out against a surface decorated with vegetative and animal motifs. According to inscriptions carved on the toes, the donor was from the Sakya clan. A few of the Thirty-Two Marks of Excellence are present, including aligned toes with raised toe prints and the large Dharma wheel at the center of the soles. The remaining surfaces are embellished with the triratna and swastika symbols, as well as the twin fish and the Bodhi tree.
