Sakyamuni Buddha

THAILAND; Dvaravati Kingdom (circa 6th–13th century), 8th century; Sandstone; H: 54.6 cm; Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena, California, USA
The statue was probably created during the 8th century of the Dvaravati Kingdom (circa 6th–13th century) in Nakhon Pathom. The Buddha has an oval face with high cheekbones and earlobes that hang down to the neck. The eyebrows form a joined double curve above the eyes that have incised pupils. The mouth is wide and the thick lips curve upward. A thin line across the chest represents the outline of a monastic robe that leaves the right shoulder bare. Dvaravati statues confine this style of robe representation to seated figures, thus providing a clue to the likely original posture of this statue.
