Maijishan Grotto 133: Attendant Bodhisattva
CHINA, Gansu, Tianshui; Northern Wei dynasty (386–534); Clay
This attendant Bodhisattva stands to the left of the seated Buddha within the first niche on the right wall of the front chamber, and has a similar counterpart on the right side. The Bodhisattva wears a long robe and is adorned with a necklace. A stole drapes over the shoulders and hangs down in two loops. The mandorla behind the Bodhisattva is barely visible due to a thick layer of soot. |
