Mogao Cave 17: Mudras
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907); Line drawing on paper; 15.4 x 143.5 cm; British Museum, London, United Kingdom
This late 9th century artwork depicts hands forming various mudras with simply drawn ink lines. The 38 mudras are mostly displayed in columns of three, although some columns contain a standing or seated figure, and one column shows four mudras. Simple and clear, it is an effective instructional diagram for teaching practitioners how to form the different hand mudras. |
