Bezeklik Cave 53: Thousand Buddhas

CHINA, Xinjiang, Turpan; circa 13th century
This painting is located on the barrel-vaulted ceiling of this rectangular cave. The Buddhas wear draped monastic robes, sit in full lotus position, and have round nimbuses and aureoles. Green jewels fill the spaces between the figures.
The painting is outlined in ink with coats of mineral green and red ocher paint spread evenly onto it. The Thousand Buddhas all have the same form with little variation, and the colors are stylistically simple.
