Figurine of Budai

This figurine of Budai was created during the Qing dynasty, when bamboo carving became popular. It is by Feng Xilu, who was active during the rule of Emperor Kangxi (reigned 1661-1722).
Budai is depicted with a round face, high forehead, laughing eyes, large nose, and broad smile. He wears a robe over both shoulders, which extends down and around his large belly and to his ankles. He holds a ball in his right hand and has his left hand around a grinning, mischievous boy. Another small boy, with his face turning upward and smiling, holds on to the monk's left knee. The portrayal of the three figures is joyful in its simplicity. |
