South Xiangtangshan Grotto 7: Ceiling

CHINA, Hebei, Handan; Northern Qi dynasty (550–577); Stone
This mural is located on the ceiling of Grotto 7. A round lotus, and four lotus jewels surrounding it on the edges, is depicted in the center of the design. Two apsaras are found on either side of each lotus jewel. Two of the four groups of apsaras are made up of musicians. They play the flute, a reed instrument, the harp, or the pipa. One of the other pairs of apsaras makes an offering of jewels and plates of fruit; another pair dance gracefully. The apsaras wear headdresses, necklaces, short lower garments, stoles, and shawls that gently flutter in the wind.
