Kerala Temple 61: Seated Buddha

Kerala Temple 61 is full of mural fragments, most of which depict seated or standing Buddhas. This image is thought to have been part of a mural on a side wall painted during the 3rd or 4th century.
The Buddha, gazing down to the left, is portrayed with narrow eyebrows, a high bridged nose, and an urna. He sits on a lotus throne with his hands forming the dhyana (meditation) mudra. The Buddha wears a simple gray monastic robe that covers both shoulders. The face is outlined with red lines, while dark ink lines are used on the facial features, limbs, folds of the clothes, and the petals of the lotus throne. |
