Zhihua Temple Zhihua Hall: Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva and the Ten Kings of Hell

CHINA, Beijing; Ming dynasty (1368–1644); 300 cm x 467 cm
This mural in Zhihua Hall has a symmetrical layout with Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva in the center. According to the Pure Regulations of Baizhang, 1,500 years after the passing of the Buddha, Ksitigarbha was born as a Silla dynasty prince named Jin Qiaojue. Jin renounced in 653 during the Tang dynasty and took up residence at Jiuhuashan (Nine Glorious Mountains), and received offerings from a local man named Min Gong. A son of Min Gong renounced under Jin and took the name Daoming. Min Gong himself later sought refuge in Buddhism and studied under his son.
Ksitigarbha sits on a lotus throne upon the back of his mount. The full-faced Bodhisattva is flanked by Daoming on the left and Min Gong on the right. The Ten Kings of Hell, each wearing official's robes and holding an imperial court baton, stand beside the central figures. Colorful clouds are painted in the background.
