Chen Sheng

CHINA; Southern Song to Yuan dynasty (1127–1368)
Chen Sheng was a painter and woodblock carver who excelled in painting horses and Buddhist images. His works include the Frontispiece of the Qisha Tripitaka. The Qisha Tripitaka was printed between 1231 and 1322. The magnificent, elegant, and well-composed print shows a multitude of characters with varying facial expressions and postures depicted in exceedingly fine lines. The frontispiece, now kept in the Shaanxi Provincial Library in Xi'an, is a fine example of woodblock printing from the early Yuan dynasty (1271-1368).
