Life of the Buddha - Miracle at Sravasti

This sculpture depicts the Buddha’s miracle at Sravasti. The Buddha is at the center, distinguished by a nimbus and wearing a robe that covers both shoulders. His right hand is probably in abhaya (fearlessness) mudra and he is levitating above the ground. The flames springing from his shoulders surround the nimbus and water pours down from his feet. Two monks with right shoulder bared kneel at his feet, gazing upwards with their palms joined in reverence. Two turbaned figures with beard and mustache stand behind them, showing their appreciation of the miracle. Other figures on the far right and left, have hands raised to their mouths and are whistling through their fingers. |
